PM Modi Inaugurates Pune Metro Pink Line with Solar Power and Women Operators
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated the 23-kilometer Pune Metro Pink Line, connecting the Hinjewadi IT hub to the District Court station. The Rs 8,300 crore project introduces solar power for 30 percent of its energy needs and employs women operators, marking a step toward sustainable urban mobility in India.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Pune Metro Pink Line through a video conference, adding a 23-kilometer corridor to India’s expanding urban rail network. The new line connects the Hinjewadi information technology hub to the District Court metro station, aiming to streamline commutes for thousands of professionals.
The project, which cost over Rs 8,300 crore, includes specific operational mandates. Approximately 30 percent of the line’s electricity will be supplied by solar power. The service will also be managed by women operators, a measure intended to expand employment opportunities within the transport sector.
During the ceremony, Modi laid the foundation stone for four Phase II corridors—Lines 2A, 2B, 4, and 4A. These future lines, with an estimated investment of Rs 13,500 crore, are designed to link residential areas with commercial and IT centers across Pune.
The opening contributes to a broader national trend in urban infrastructure. India’s operational metro network has grown from 248 kilometers before 2014 to nearly 1,200 kilometers today. The Pink Line is expected to reduce travel times and improve access to critical infrastructure for the city's workforce.
